The Pagham Pram Race is more than just a race—it’s a beloved tradition, a celebration of community, and a whole lot of fun! Since its inception, the event has brought together friends, families, and competitors from all walks of life for a day filled with creativity, laughter, and friendly competition.
Founded in 1946, The Pagham Pram Race has grown into one of the most anticipated events in the local calendar. What started as a quirky race of demobbed servicemen, to raise money, to medically treat soldiers returning from the war. One pushing the pram and another as a baby in it, making sure to drink a pint each, at all the village pubs. The prize, a christmas fruit cake.
In more recent years it has evolved into a cherished tradition where participants dress up, decorate prams, and navigate the streets of Pagham, whatever the weather—all in the name of fun and fundraising.
The Pagham Pram Race now runs every year on Boxing Day, whatever the weather. Teams of two or more push decorated prams through a set course, stopping at local pubs along the way to enjoy refreshments and embrace the festive spirit. Creativity is key—participants often go all out with themed outfits, custom prams, and hilarious antics that keep the spectators entertained.
Starting at the mill on Pagham Road and stopping at The Bear, The Lamb and Maria’s Cafe, a course of approximately 3 miles that finishes at The Bear car park.
Lately there has been as many as 60 Pram Entrants, some of these are fantastic designed floats usually accompanied by topical fancy dress costumes.
